(transitive / intransitive verb) Usage note: This is the usual term used by all speakers.
To promote something by talking or shouting about it, often outside a shop. The word often has a negative implication. The verb can be transitive ('to spruik a product') or intransitive ('to spruik outside a shop').
Example: Where permit holders feel that exceptional circumstances apply to their spruiking operation, an application to spruik with amplification or other sound generating devices can be made in the form of a written proposal to the City of Melbourne addressing the following criteria guidelines.
